The terms Oriental Rug has
been used, overused and misused throughout the last few decades. Any
carpet with a certain design pattern whether hand made or mass
factory produced is termed oriental carpet by some companies. The
carpet industry themselves are to blame for such a generic use of
the term. Carpet outlets, furniture stores and even some large home
improvement stores stores have been known to put out a carpet that
'looks' like oriental rug and just claim it as so.
Let's define what a real hand-made Oriental Rug is.
Actually it's not that complicated.
A hand-made oriental carpet is:
a. Made by hand - not mass produced in the factory.
Mass factory produced carpets are not unique because the machines do
a perfect job of duplicating a pattern.
A hand made carpet on the other hand are imperfect and all carpets
with seemingly same design are different.
The beauty of the hand made (or hand-knotted, or hand woven,
however, you want to call it), is in it's imperfection.
They are a work of art.
We like to call them the "Art on the floor".
b. By definition it should genuinely come from an Asian country (aka
the Orient)
Oriental rugs could be sub-divided into Middle East or Far East.
The most well-known countries in the list for hand woven carpets
would include India, Afganistan, Iran, Nepal, Tibet, Pakistan,
Turkey and some southern regions of what used to be the former
Soviet (eg, Armenia and Azerbaijan). "Wilton"®, "Karistan"® and "Couristan"® rugs are made by machines
and copy Oriental carpet designs. Please don't confuse them with
authentic "Oriental carpets". Also know that no genuine Oriental rugs are made of nylon or polypropylene.
