The designs are almost always tribal and geometric with very stylized motifs. Turkoman inspired gul (rose) patterns and their variants like the ‘elephant foot’ are commun. The most frequently used colors are red, which is extracted from the roots of the madder plant, black and ivory as the natural color of undied yarn. Camel hair is also used with its natural color. The Baluch are probably the most well known Afghani tribe that contributes to the oriental rug market today.
